Long Covid Support Service

Long Covid is a term used to describe the ongoing and debilitating symptoms individual’s experience some weeks and months after contracting Covid-19.  Long Covid impacts on an individual’s ability to participate in activities of daily living.   Recent statistics from the Office of National Statistics report that:

‘Over the four-week period ending 6 March 2021, an estimated 1.1 million people in private households in the UK reported experiencing long COVID (symptoms persisting more than four weeks after the first suspected coronavirus (COVID-19) episode that are not explained by something else’

Occupational Therapists play an important role in rehabilitation following COVID-19.  Occupational Therapy NI recently attended the Long Covid Summit, organised by the Society of Occupational Medicine.  This was very informative and it demonstrated the range and severity of  symptoms individuals with the condition experience in addition to the limited support available to help them manage their symptoms.

Occupational Therapy NI has had several enquiries from individuals suffering from the condition and are pleased to announce the launch of a Long Covid Support Service. This service aims to assist individuals with the condition increase their independence at home, the workplace and within their communities. Intervention includes advice on:

  • Fatigue management
  • Reasonable adjustments in the workplace
  • the provision of Assistive Devices
